Birchbrae luxury self catering lodges

Scottish Wildlife

The Birchbrae luxury lodges are set in a wildlife rich woodland clearing and because of this we have attepted to bring the Wildlife to you. There are bird feeders outside each lodge window so you can watch the birds that use them as if you are in a luxury hide. You can see Siskin, Coal Tits and Great Spotted Woodpecker as well as the more usual visitors. You might also see our other visitors such as Woodcock, Sparrowhawk, Buzzard, Crossbill and Treecreeper.

In addition to the bird feeders, we have several Red Squirrel feeders which attract these beautiful mammals all year round. Watch them climb into the box and pick out a Hazlenut and then eat it perched on the ledge of the box. They even hang off the bird feeders from time to time. In addition to the Squirrels, there are Pine Martens which will come and feed on your verandah in the evening and at night. They like some toast and jam and are a real treat to see. A stroll up the forest track behind the lodges in the early morning or late evening is often rewarded with a glimpse of the beautiful Roe Deer.

Flowers are abundant around the lodges and in Spring the woods are full of Bluebells (even some white ones!). In June you can see our majestic Early Purple Orchids.

Scotland is renowned for its Midges but at Birchbrae we have attempted to combat them with Calor Midgeaters. Over the past 2 years the Midge population has been much reduced and this makes for a more pleasant stay.
