Birchbrae &
Our Wildlife
Surrounded by pine and birch forest, the Birchbrae Highland Lodges make the perfect “hide” from which to view all manner of widlife. You can read below about the "local residents" and watch from binoculars in your lodges to see their daily antics.
Sightings around Birchbrae regularly include inquisitive Red Squirrels, playful Rabbits and very occasionally, the odd secretive Pine Marten. “Rusty” our resident Red Squirrel is a favourite with guests and we have a feeder in the grounds.
Birdlife abounds here too and many guests have commented on the pleasure of awakening to the chatter of birdsong. Whilst you are here, look out for Robins, Blue Tits, Barn Owls and Woodpeckers.
Roe deer are rare in the grounds but have been spotted. Nervous creatures by nature they have been known to nibble the foliage from our apparently tasty trees!
Wildlife
Watching
Watch from Our Lodges
All of our Lodges have porch areas with seating where you can quietly sit and watch as the local wildlife goes about their day.
Bird and Squirrel Feeders
We like to look after our local wildlife and each Lodge has its own bird feeder and squirrel feeder so guests can watch the birds feeding on their veranda or if they sit very still at their picnic table they can look out for a red squirrel visiting for nuts.
Foraging
Its not all about the wildlife, we have some pretty spectacular flora around Birchbrae too. At the right times of year you can forage for brambles, wild mushrooms, wild garlic and more.
Wildlife Further Afield
Further afield, you can go on wildlife safaris in Glencoe or on the water from Ballachulish. There is a seal colony cruise that leaves from the pier at Fort William too. Loch Lochy to the north-east of Fort William is breeding ground for an Osprey couple and ferry crossings from both Oban and Mallaig are often witness to Dolphin & Whale sightings. The Treshnish Isles off the coast of Oban are famous for the puffin colonies where you can enjoy these quirky birds in the natural habitat.

A Little Hideaway
This property is like a little hideaway. The minute we drove in, we felt relaxed. We loved the sound of the running stream and birdlife surrounding the chalets.
